History of CCIVA

In 1963, 24 volunteers were formally organized as The Auxiliary to the Edmonton Cancer Clinic.  The Auxiliary’s mandate was limited to providing transportation for cancer patients and providing refreshments at the Cancer Clinic. The Auxiliary’s constitution was ratified in 1965, and the name was changed in 1968 to “The Auxiliary to the Dr WW Cross Cancer Institute”. The name was then changed to the Cross Cancer Institute Volunteer Association in 1984.

The CCIVA was incorporated under the Societies Act of the Province of Alberta in 1985 and registered under the Alberta Charitable Fundraising Act in 1997.  Its activities at the Cross Cancer Institute are governed by the Objects of the Association as registered with the Office of the Registrar of Corporations in 1990, and newly revised Bylaws registered in 2012.

Volunteers registered with Cancer Care Alberta (CCA) Volunteer Resources department at the Cross Cancer Institute are members of the CCIVA.

CCIVA has donated over

$8.5 million

How we support CCIVA volunteers

Education Opportunities

Partnering with Volunteer Resources, our Learning Opportunities Committee ensures education opportunities for our volunteer base. We host an annual day of learning, participate in site Grand Rounds, and provide palliative care training to appropriate roles.

Annual Recognition

During our Annual General Meeting, we hold a more formal Annual Recognition event to thank our volunteers. It provides a dedicated space for volunteers to socialize and have fun.

CCIVA Pins

We like to recognize the hours of work our volunteers contribute. We provide CCIVA hourly pins for hour milestones starting with 100 hours.

Our volunteers proudly display them on their burgundy vests and CCI ID tags.

Governance

A Board of Trustees governs and manages the affairs of the Association.

It is comprised of between eight and twelve Trustees, designated as Officers and Trustees at Large.  Trustees are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting (AGM), and are eligible for re-election for a maximum of three consecutive two year terms.  The Board holds at least five (5) meetings each year.

We are governed by The Government of Alberta Societies Act.
